Sons & Daughters

This Scottish quartet (two guys, two girls) doesn't really have anything new to say. It's all in the delivery. Singer Adele Bethel excitedly tears through each song like she can't wait to get to the next one. On its second album, Sons & Daughters dips into a whole lotta retro noise: '60s girl-groups here, doo-wop there, garage rave-ups over there. This Gift doesn't actually add up to a cohesive listen, since the band is too busy jumping all over the place to build momentum. And there's not much here to distinguish one cut from another. A memorable riff occasionally surfaces (like the one in "Iodine"), but neither the breathless Bethel nor the insistent handclaps can force enthusiasm on an album that it so readily bounces off of.
