Whole Lotta Shakin' at Nighttown

Posted By on Fri, May 1, 2009 at 9:00 AM

Roots of American Music (ROAM) was conceived in 1999 by local musician and Fairmount School of Music founder/executive director Kevin Richards to tap into the talents of area musicians to use music to teach about American culture and history.

The nonprofit group works with schools that frequently don’t have the resources for the residency programs ROAM offers.

To support the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, the group is sponsoring Whole Lotta Shakin’, a multi-course sit-down dinner plus a concert from 6-10 p.m. at Nighttown on May 14.

A band that includes members of the Magpies, the Jack Fords and singer-songwriter Chris Allen will perform music by artists associated with Memphis’ Sun Recording Studio in the ’50s — influential performers like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and Carl Perkins.

The $100 ticket includes dinner, two drinks, the concert (which starts at 7 p.m.) and a silent auction. Call Sheela Das at ROAM, 216.321.9353 to make reservations, and hurry — the event has sold out the two previous years. —Anastasia Pantsios
