Dreadful Yawns Take a Break

The Dreadful Yawns are “closing up shop for a while,” according to their MySpace page, although the exact nature of their future appears fuzzy even to them.
“Are we breaking up? No, probably not,” they write. “The Yawns in some form or another will carry on. Are there going to be lineup changes? I suppose none of us knows. It’s possible we could emerge as a very different creature, or the same old ugly one.”
The band, whose constant has been leader Ben Gmetro, already has a history of becoming “a very different creature” over the course of the four albums it’s released.
The music on 2003’s Early, 2005’s self-titled CD — the last release on legendary California label Bomp! following the death of founder Greg Shaw — 2007’s Rest and last year’s Take Shape (the last two on Cleveland’s Exit Stencil) has ranged from rootsy folk to experimental psychedelic excursions.
With the band’s future so uncertain, fans will want to catch their goodbye-for-now set opening for Charlotte, North Carolina’s Yardwork at the Beachland Tavern at 9 p.m. tomorrow. Tickets are $5. —Anastasia Pantsios
