10 Things Going on in Cleveland this Weekend (November 1-3)

With whipsmart melodic sentiments, Diego Figueiredo’s talent is so abundantly clear. He’s got the goods for jazz aficionados, but he’ll also satisfy the musical interests of any guitar players — and any musician, really. His stuff touches on everything from virtuosic playing to more cerebral outings, like “Que Reste-T-Il.” There’s a lot of jazz and a lot of classical perspective in his playing. A little something for everyone, really. There’s also his cover of Thelonious Monk’s “Round Midnight”! Figueiredo’s live show promises to be a hypnotic evening of dynamic playing. With the right ears, it’s sure to be borderline theatrical. Advice: Tonight’s show will pair well with a deep red wine. The cost is $20. (Sandy)

Tonight at 7:30, celebrate the launch of Cleveland Play House's new $25 under 35 program that allows 35-year-olds and younger to see fabulous shows for a mere 25 buckaroos. Start your evening with David Ives' racy new two-person comedy, Venus in Fur, at the intimate Second Stage Theater; then after the show from 9 p.m. to midnight, come backstage to the 21-and-over Club Venus for cocktails, decadent desserts, musical entertainment, photo booths, and a whole slew of "naughty-but-nice" contests. Inspired by the graffiti he saw as a kid while growing up in Cleveland, Bob Peck now makes expressionist art of his own and has held exhibits at a number of galleries around town. He uses the same tools — spray paint, markers and acrylics — he used as a graffiti artist. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum has enlisted him to do presentations on graffiti and its connection to hip-hop and he also works as an presenter and educator for the Progressive Arts Alliance. Tonight from 6 to 10, his latest show, Flourish, opens at Rotten Meat. (Niesel)

Today and tomorrow, Heinen’s/WVIZ present the 18th annual World Series of Wine at the Terrace Club at Progressive Field. The event will feature fun and informative events perfect for everyone. With more than 450 wines available for sampling, all tastes will be easily accommodated. There will also be hors d’oeuvres specially selected to complement each wine. For those wishing to learn more about wine, wine-tasting seminars featuring world-class vintages and varietals will be offered. All proceeds from the event benefit the public television station WVIZ/PBS. The event takes place from 7:30 to 10:30 tonight and from 1 to 4 p.m. and 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. tomorrow. (Rus)

Though it might not sound like it, the Detroit Shoreway's Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration is a family-friendly affair. Kids love to join the Parade of Skeletons that features life-sized puppets and plenty of people in costume. Vendors will set up inside Cleveland Public Theatre's Parish Hall and Gordon Square Arts District bars and restaurants will have specials. Now in its ninth year, the event kicks off at 11 a.m., and the parade starts at 3:30 p.m. Admission is free. (Niesel)

When disco became popular in the ’70s, it had its fair share of haters who thought it diminished the quality of rock n’ roll. But even acts such as the Rolling Stones embraced some of disco’s funky bass riffs and synthesizer flourishes. In retrospect, disco looks like a cool musical movement, even if some of the outfits and dance moves were rather cheesy. Disco Dada Dreamscape, Spaces’ 35th anniversary annual benefit and art auction, celebrates all things disco. The event kicks off tonight at 7 with a VIP reception that includes entry to the private lounge and free drink tickets. Then, the doors open to the general public at 8 p.m. VIP tickets cost $135 and general public tickets are $45. If you’re just looking to dance, come at 10 p.m. and only pay $10 for a ticket. The Dead Milkmen, a novelty punk act named after a character in a Toni Morrison novel, had a big underground hit with their 1985 debut Big Lizard in My Backyard. The album yielded the single “Bitchin’ Camaro,” a funny song that spins a narrative about two dudes who exchange a dim-witted conversation about wearing Motley Crue T-shirts and the fictional Doors tribute act Crystal Shit, ostensibly paving the way for dumbass duos such as Garth and Wayne and Beavis and Butthead. The band never really delivered on the promise of its debut and imploded in 1995. Though it reunited in 2004 to play the funeral of bassist Dave Schulthise, the band didn’t officially reform until 2008, and it’s resumed a schedule of touring and recording. Tonight’s show at Cleveland Public Theatre is part of WCSB’s fifth annual Halloween masquerade ball. Should be a blast. This event is free. (Niesel)

Natalie Lanese's murals include iconic Cleveland images. She takes pictures of notable bridges and buildings and then builds them into playful collages. Tonight from 5 p.m. to midnight, Mahall's hosts an opening reception that will include an artist talk, food, drinks and music. Her murals will eventually be displayed on the new Innerbelt bridge along with murals from artists Eric Rippert. Peter Brock and Erin Guido. Rippert, Brock and Guido's work will also be on display tonight at Mahall's via digital projections. A percentage of sales from food and drink will go to LANDStudio, a local group that aims to improve Cleveland's neighborhoods with art installations and greenspace projects. (Niesel)

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History presents the North American debut of the provocative exhibition, Nature's Mating Games: Beyond the Birds & the Bees. Created by The Natural History Museum, London, Nature's Mating Games explores the wild science of seduction in the animal kingdom. Nature’s Mating Games exposes unusual, odd and sometimes dangerous behaviors used to attract a mate. It showcases mating strategies that influence evolution. This exhibit is recommended for visitors 13 and older. $5 per person (in addition to General Admission). (Rus)

Grunge stalwarts Soundgarden don’t get the same credit as Pearl Jam and Nirvana. The band formed nearly 30 years and has had an enormous influence. And despite a hiatus of more than 10 years, the band came back strong in 2010 to play Lollapalooza and eventually release King Animal, a new studio album, in 2012. On an acoustic tour, frontman Chris Cornell will sing songs from King Animal, making it the first time the album’s tunes have been performed as acoustic arrangements. The set list will also include Soundgarden favs such as “Fell on Black Days,” “Black Hole Sun” and “Blow Up the Outside World” as well as a few choice cuts from Audioslave, the supergroup he fronted for a short period while Soundgarden was on hiatus. He’s also including some covers in the sets and revisiting tracks fro the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and even Michael Jackson (Cornell does a surprisingly soulful rendition of “Billie Jean”). American/Sri Lankan folk artist, Bhi Bhiman, opens the show. Tickets are between $40.50 and $46. (Niesel)
