Re: “Best of Cleveland 2014

Every other "best of cleveland" list at least tends to stick to locally owned and operated. This list is sad. Our city is known for having the best food and drink in the country and you're going to give awards to corporate businesses like winking lizard? Half of these winners shouldn't have even been allowed in the running. Take a note from other cleveland best of awards and stick to CLEVELAND ONLY winners. Shame, this is embarrassing for you scene magazine.

Re: “Best of Cleveland 2014

Been reading these BEST of CLEVELAND lists for a good 20 years now...and they're getting more laughable and ridiculous every year. If Cleveland is getting better, why are these lists getting worse? It's neither the categories nor the's the people who ultimately pick them. The readers. Fewer every year, and more willing to select chain mediocrity, in too many categories.

I do realize that the "BEST of" issue is by far the fattest SCENE of the year (as it also is in other cities) and generates huge ad revenues as the venues and eateries and businesses gear up for the all-too-short Cleveland summer season...but maybe it's time to finally pull the plug. Some of the winners made me cringe. Les Roberts? Crocker Park? Rover? Townhall? Seriously? This is the "best" we've got? I don't think so!

And you're a print rag, right? Why the need for any web and social media categories at all? Why pander to the people who no longer read?

Maybe just blow this whole concept off, after all these years, and put out a bigger Guide to Cleveland or a bigger Summer Guide...or just stop letting the readers vote with their posterior orifices? The fans ruined the MLB All-Star balloting, and it was denied to them for many years. Maybe you need to do the same.

Expecting even less in 2015,

We know that the West Side Market isn't a farmer's market right?

Like, it's probably actually my favorite thing about Cleveland, but a farmer's market it is not.

Re: “Best of Cleveland 2014

Perhaps Scene needs more categories, such as editors choice and peoples choice. Theres plenty of outstanding veteran editorial talent on staff at Scene Magazine right now that could have had made substantial contributions. I believe Cleveland Magazine has something similar. This could help round out the ballot stuffers from and the shy aficionado / labor of love contenders with all the street cred...

I DEFINITELY dont think Scene blew it. I feel like a handful of categories are challenging to begin with (i.e. the final list of nominees are not congruent to the overly specific OR overly vague category) but this seems to be an ongoing problem every year for every local awards contest.

Again with the musician categories, its just so tough when some folks are stronger self promoters than others (i.e. simply more aggressive via social media or text), and being the *Rock and Roll Capitol of The World*, our local citizens are demanding that the cream rise to the top, not the ballot stuffers. I personally skipped over a lot of music categories because I did not have a strong opinion for or against a specific contender, so maybe Scene can post videos or music links for people to form opinions or even learn about artists in the first place. Just an idea...

Re: “Best of Cleveland 2014

I would like to imagine that the idea behind this is to promote local artists and establishments and to help highlight Cleveland as a city of extremely talented people and put a spot light on Cleveland's hardest working and most talented groups and give these amazing people and places something to be proud of and a chance to give them something that could hang on the walls of their establishment or put on their resume or in their press kits with give these people a chance to further their success and growth through this "royal" award. But instead you have "royally" failed to do so on multiple levels. You have made a joke of, marginalized, and completely abandoned some of the hardest working people that I know in this city.

The fact that you even allowed a non-musician (Darnell 25) to be nominated for "best up and coming band or musician" and then allowed him to win it, speaks volumes about this waste of paper you call a publication. WMMS 100.7 has made a total mockery and a complete laughing stock of your entire publication with this high school popularity contest. You've jeopardized the integrity of what could have been a good thing for all of Cleveland's finest. But hey, at least you won my vote for Cleveland's "Class Clown".

Way to go Scene Magazine! YA BLEW IT!

Re: “Best of Cleveland 2014

I am SO PLEASED with this list with the exception of:

Cleveland Foodie being best food blog. That blog is more shameless self promotion by the author than anything else.

Townhall shouldnt even be a candidate in any category as they are the most unauthentic establishment in town and lower the IQ of W. 25th.

There are a few musician categories that are a reflection of self promotion versus talent, but what can you do.
