My favorite pizza restaurant ever! Eat there every time I am back in Cleveland!
Growing up in Canton, I remember as a child it being a BIG DEAL when we had company for my dad to drive to Barberton and pick up chicken and hot sauce from Belgrade Gardens. Food just tasted better back then! The chicken was chickeny-er and the hot sauce, which now I know is not exactly sauce, was delicious. I occasionally make fried chicken the Southern way soaking it in peppered buttermilk, rolling in seasoned flour, dunking it in an egg wash then rolling it again in Panko bread crumbs to fry in very hot peanut oil. It's good and I always buy organic, free-range whole chicken cut into pieces which drives my mom crazy because it is so expensive. Such is our world where food is mass produced and all the flavor is gone. But I remember the 50's & 60's being the Baby Boomer that I am. Nostalgic article and now I am going to make the hot sauce next time and fry my chicken in lard to see if I can stir up a memory. ;<)
Sounds awesome! Nice to see a man with a mission and a good plan.
Don't forget ABC THE TAVERN, which opened its east location (uptown) before any of the mentioned other great places arrived.
Delegates, I'm sure by some lapse of memory, they left off the granddaddy of neighborhood joints, ABC the TAVERN on West 25. You will have a great time and make great new friends. PS across the street from the casino downtown is Cleveland's hidden "hideaway" gem, The Ontario. Pint and a shot; $3.25.
Welcoming all since 1976
Chickenrones? In my neighbrhood those are known as grivenes. I made duck grivenes once, which my late and witty mom dubbed "quacklings."
I can't wait to try everything and, of course, go back for seconds.
I had lunch there a couple months ago. The vegan Bahn mi was the worst I've ever had. Flavorless. The service was nonexistent. I had to walk up to the expediter's window and ask the guy in the kitchen if anyone was going to run our food which had been sitting in the window for 7 minutes. I timed it out of curiosity. No one-not the server, not the owners who were puttering around-not one person was paying attention. It's a beautiful space, but my experience was pretty terrible.
