Re: “People & Places

You both sound kind of stuck up. Lakewood has a DIVERSE student population and not always the economic, parental support that some of the other suburbs with higher test scores and graduations rates. Try thinking about it in terms of the actual kids in the school district and their success rather then just the numbers they put up.

Re: “People & Places

Best suburb: Lakewood. Best schools: Lakewood. People are obviously voting for their local district, which is fine. I don't think anyone in the area really believes Lakewood is the "best" school district.

Re: “People & Places

Did you take into account graduation rates and test scores for best school district? Because that just simply isn't right. There are a handful of other suburban schools which have won more awards, higher test scores, higher graduation rates, ect. Sounds pretty inaccurate.

Re: “Best of Cleveland Readers' Choice

The West Side Market is to "Best Farmers Market" as Frank and Jimmy are to honest and ethical local government. To be sure the WSM is an architectural and historic gem, but the food not so much. Don't go looking for a "real farmer" or much in the way of fresh, locally grown or raised food. You can find most of the same, but fresher products at Dave's, Heinen's and Giant Eagle.

And if you are concerned with food safety and traceability do you care that too many of the inside vendors remove the meat products from the manufacturer's packaging? There is a significant lack of important, and sometimes required information about the source of the meat, lot number, contents (are you allergic to any additives) and more.

I love it when my favorites make the list, especially places that I've been going to forever.

Re: “Shops & Wares

How the hell can the West Side Market win as the best farmers market when the WSM is NOT even a farmers market?! The vendors just go to the food terminal and buy produce that has been trucked or flown in from all over the county (all over the world, actually) and resell it at the WSM. No different from what you buy at your local Giant Eagle or Marcs or Costco. The people who sell it are not farmers. REAL Farmers Markets have stands set up by the farmers who grew the food, all of it local, and much of it organic.

The West Side Market may deserve to win as best Cleveland landmark, or best place to grab a felafel, or best place to buy cheap produce, but it is NOT a farmers market. Wake up, Cleveland! Shop at REAL farmers markets for the best quality local foods, and keep our small farmers in business!
