Explosions in the Sky

Wed., April 26, 7 p.m.

Though they’ve been labeled post-rock, the only thing Explosions in the Sky has in common with rock music is the use of guitars and drums. In a way, the Texas band has more in common with classical music than rock music as it employs slowly building crescendos, expressive dynamic shifts and thematic peaks and valleys to create expansive and emotional music. The music is also almost entirely absent of lyrical content. Despite the unorthodox approach, they’ve been active since the early 2000s, and the band’s music has appeared in everything from television shows and movies to podcasts and video games. On previous albums, the band uses long songs to create huge build-ups and cathartic releases. Last year’s album, The Wilderness, experiments with shorter songs and electronic influences, but the spirit and aim of the music still remains the same. (Johnny Cook) $25-$35

Tobin Sprout/DTCV

Wed., April 26, 8:30 p.m.

Tobin Sprout, previously a member of Dayton band Guided By Voices, has had a quietly prolific career as both a visual artist and a musician. His solo music bears resemblance to vintage Guided By Voices tracks — it’s got the same lo-fi qualities and often stumbles or skips around between melodies in the middle of a song. His newest album, The Universe And Me, plays upon these sensibilities and focuses on themes of childhood and maturity. Songs like “Honor Guard” and “Future Boy Today/Man Tomorrow” have the indie-pop qualities of a Guided By Voices track, but others like “When I Was A Boy” and “I Fall You Fall” operate more like wistful piano ballad. Sprout has played shows before, but this is the first time he’s played a full US slate. DTCV, which features another former Guided By Voices member, will open the show. (Cook) $7 ADV $15 DOS

A Radical Revolt Against a Revolting Culture UK Slam champion David Lee Morgan spits rhythm, rhyme and intense lyrics over music composed by Michael Harding of Animat. The show begins with the roar of the jungle and follows the broad sweep of human history as it develops through revolution, defeat, and renewed revolution. What can we learn from our past revolutions, both the achievements and mistakes? Are we doomed to be forever controlled by the market forces that rule over us like some blind idiot god? $5 donation to benefit Revolution Books
