I miss being able to get up in the morning pull open the newspaper and in a few square inches find a statement that was utterly transcendentally wonderful. You never knew what gift Mr Watterson would have, be it an elaborate fantasy, a sly satirical statement, a few simple lines, or an outrageous pictorial creation of an imaginary world. I could share it with friends, and when I visited my parents it was wonderful seeing the different reactions my mother and father would have to the strip. I have many happy associations with the times and people who are now lost, but which I can recall whenever I feel nostalgic and find old C &H panels reposted on the internet. Seeing each one anew fills me with pleasure and makes me thankful for the decade long gift Mr Watterson bestowed on us. If only I could turn back the clock and relive that glorious decade and read each C&H again for the first time. If only ....
Chagrin Falls is a nice place, almost the kind of ideal community that Norman Rockwell created in his paintings. It would be a good place to live. And maybe one day a few years from now when I take y late spring drive around Ohio, I will step into a gallery in NE Ohio and find a small jewel of a painting initialed by an up and coming local artist with the initials BW, that I will be able to take back home with me.
I miss a better time and miss not being able to savour a new Calvin and Hobbs, each morning with an intensity that has only slightly lessened over the last 15 years. In a strange way you were like family and a friend because of the experiences, I shared with them through your art.
But I am very very gratefull for the wonderful stupendous mind kabloeing gift you gave me and to the rest of the world.
