Re: “Dark Days for the Black Arts

HI,
I am 19 and currently a dancer in Karamu's Black Nativity. It wasn't until the fall of 2008 before I even knew about Karamu. I was told by one of my mentor Talise Campbell to come audition for the "New Gospel Musical" God's Trombone. Since then Spivey has given me many opportunities. Not to long ago Spivey pulled me to the side and asked "would you be interested in choreographing God's Trombone this season" when those words entered my ears I almost jumped out the window. My dream and goal is to be choreographer/director. It is so hard to do so in Cleveland because everyone tends to put you sown instead of trying to lift you up. If it wasn't for Spivey I don't think I would still be trying to pursue this profession. But he gives me hope that i can be greatness because he see's my talent. At the moment I'm dancing in Black Nativity and Choreographing Rid-All "A Green Movement" which goes up January 14th in the jellife Theater. I am so grateful to be able to go to a place like this to spread my gift and help others do the same. I just wish others my age will take on the opportunity they have at hand before its to late.
