@Nick Brown. That is completely incorrect. Oval pistons? No they do not. In fact they would me slightly smaller than the bore of the cylinder to allow for expansion as the engine components get to operating temperature. Engines are designed to operate at operating temperature, not cold temperatures. So the warm up process should happen as quickly as possible, hence the stringent emission regulations put upon automakers. The cold start process is something that the EPA has tried to curb extensively (E-CATS, Heated Oxygen Sensors,etc). The cold start process has been designed to be shorter and shorter with new regulations to curb the amount of fuel wasted in the warm up process. Starting a cold engine takes a lot of fuel, and that consumption adds up.
