I don't understand how it's possible that Council didn't know about this. They have to approve every contract. Did nobody notice that there wasn't one for recycling this year? Isn't there a committee on "Development, Planning, and Sustainability"? Why is Kerry McCormack depending on me to tell him what's going on at City Hall?
Help me out here. What is City Council for if they don't have even the most basic information about the functions of city government?
Serious question: How is it possible that this "coalition" has 94% of the land for this project but failed to secure an exclusive option to buy this property long ago?
The problem isn't that Bobby bought the property knowing it was part of the park plan. The problem is that the park "coalition" didn't have its ducks in a row when they announced they needed that property. What could be their motive for that?
It's not that complicated: most local politicians work for the real estate people.
Look at how City Council members get re-elected. They get credit for "getting things done," which means getting things built in their wards, which means facilitating subsidies for developers, which means never pissing off the "leadership" that holds power. So anyone who looks thoughtfully at our "economic development" system, which is all about real estate, is marginalized or shut down.
And then we get this, because what's left is a supermajority of City Council and a supermajority of County Council who are highly amenable to whatever the real estate people ask for.
Serious question, Sam: What does the Cleveland SCLC do besides give awards? I'm not far away from a lot of the civil rights and anti-racist activism in this town but I haven't seen SCLC people around for any of it.
Also, fun fact, Rev. E.T. Caviness worked for Geo. Voinovich back when he was Mayor--I think he had a paid staff position even--and mainly served to deflect criticism of Voinovich for his outright racist policies in the 1980s and 1990s. So it's predictable that his organization is caping for Budish today.

"Mayor Jackson said too many people are putting trash in with recycling, and it doesn’t take much trash to contaminate the entire load."
If your system requires 99% sorting compliance, then you don't have a system.
