Delve into the deeper (sexual) thoughts with
Tender Napalm at Cleveland Public Theatre
by Christine Howey
If you like rough sex but without, um, the sex part, then you're sure to be entranced by this one-act exploration by Philip Ridley into the psychosexual byways of a relationship. However, if you don't come in with that attitude, it may be hard for you to catch up with this dense, florid, fantasy-drenched and relentlessly in-your-face piece.…

Art meets science at Arts Collinwood
by Joseph Clark
Growing up, even those least enthralled
by the wonders of nature surely found some thrills in the illustrations of science text books. As models stared forward with bovine-calm faces, impossible x-ray cross-sections lay bare the workings of their organs, which were at once repellant for their gore, and fascinating for their bio-mechanical elegance.…

Even with a couple wrinkles,
the gambler's paradise in Guys and
Dolls comes up a natural winner
by Christine Howey
Those lovable cardsharks, bone-shakers, horserace touts and their dames are back again, filling the fictional streets of New York City with their tortured syntax and great songs, in Guys and Dolls. This co-production by Great Lakes Theater and Playhouse Square gets plenty of things right—including a couple juicy performances and some ensemble dance scenes that jolt the Hanna stage to life.…

What we make of what's around us
by Joseph Clark
Matthew Kolodziej's painting "Paradis" sings with jazzy energy. A series of rectangular panels jut in every direction like billboards crowding out the storefronts of a street corner.…

It's too bad Consumer Reports doesn't have a rating system for men, so women could compare features of prospective male romantic partners and see which models have been recommended. (No doubt men, gays and lesbians would appreciate a similar guide.)…

The Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory is workshop and gallery for practitioners of print art and artisanal paper production, but also prides itself as teaching space for those same arts. A large and skillful cast finds
the key to The Iceman Cometh.

In Shakespeare plays, the clowns and noblemen are separate characters. But in Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh, virtually each drunken character is foolish and wise, pitiable and exalted.…

CSU student exhibition displays talent and maturity

Readers of criticism learn that an artist's
"maturity" is something good, whatever this obscure quality may be. If it is anything, it is command of powers, and especially the ability to make newness.…

The steeds in War Horse are a memorable theatrical offering
by Christine Howey
If one were to offer a concise comment on the script of War Horse, now at PlayhouseSquare, it might read: It's an after-school special about the love shared between a boy and his horse, with bullets. But this show is much more than that, thanks to three things: some invigorating scenic effects, a ripping good performance by former Cleveland actor Andrew May, and life-size horsey puppets that seem so real you can almost smell the pony biscuits from the lobby.…

Convoluted Perhaps
Pericles defies easy understanding, yet is often funny
by Christine Howey
You'd think that a play would be absolutely riveting if it included two ship wrecks, incest, death, an innocent young woman sold into slavery in a brothel, and a final wondrous reuniting of a family. These are just some of the things that happen in Perhaps Pericles, the re-working of a play written by William Shakespeare and George Wilkins, who were contemporaries.…

Myth Buster
by Joseph Clark
The iconographies of living and dead mythologies
are irresistible not only because of the association with things of "ultimate concern" that they have accumulated over their history. Often, they are affecting in themselves, bypassing cultural particularities to speak directly to the extremes of human experience, usually its various modes of suffering.…

Photographs take on artsy, painterly qualities in Tregoning's exhibition
by Joseph Clark
It's an art world truism that the rise of photo-graphy "freed" painters from the task of mere mimicry on canvas and allowed them to devote themselves to explorations of pure forms, colors and concepts. However, as pictures became cleaner and sharper, photographers also wearied of trueness-to-life and drew on painterly experiments to make their own products artistic.…

Old Will is deceiving again in the comical romp Much Ado About Nothing at Great Lakes Theater
by Christine Howey
Life is full of contradictions. Teachers tell their students not to lie, then, at some point, they hand them Shakespeare's plays, which are so filled with lies and counterfeits of various sorts that the mind boggles.…
