In Power, Faith, and Fantasy: America in the Middle East, 1776 to the Present, historian Michael Oren chronicles the 225-year timeline thats led us to the war in Iraq. Americas history in the Middle East did not begin after World War II, he says. We have a long, rich, and nuanced history in the region. Oren spent more than three years researching a huge number of original documents to get to the bottom of the relationship. After 9/11, Americans were asked to make some very profound decisions about their future in the Middle East, he says. And they had no historical context. Despite the rocky past, Oren says hes hopeful. The Middle East is not a static region, he says. Its far more open and stable than its ever been.
