A League of Their Own

Women's guild turns holiday drama into Christmas farce.

Like a slapstick scene from an old I Love Lucy episode, a cast of accident-prone actresses vows that the show must go on in The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen's Guild Dramatic Society's Production of a Christmas Carol. Take the opening scene, in which the woman who plays a gender-bending Cratchit is rushed to the hospital before the curtain rises, because she's been run over by a caravan of supermarket shopping carts. "She's just been in the operating room to have a can of corned beef surgically removed," says Edward Kuntzman, director of the Harmony Players' dinner-theater production. "She comes in with a broken arm, her neck is in a collar, and she still plays the part."The David McGillivray-Walter Zerlin play is part of the Farndale Avenue series of scripts that parodies classics like Macbeth, The Mikado — even the '70s TV show Love Boat. "Some of the costume changes are too (so?) quick that they don't get done. Parts of the set accidentally collapse," says Kuntzman. "It's very Monty Python, very British. You see how really stupid it can get." Act I starts at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays through Sunday, December 16, at the Harmony Spot, 1227 North Main Street in North Canton. Tickets are $8 to $19.50. Call 330-305-1466 or visit www.harmonyspot.com.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2:30 p.m. Starts: Dec. 6. Continues through Dec. 16, 2007
