Once associated with the otherworldly Animal Collective, Brooklyn's Akron/Family has moved to a world all its own — a planet that's sometimes complex (the music), other times not so much (the lyrics). Its latest album, last year's Love Is Simple, is a rich exploration of folk music, pushing song structures into a realm where the voice becomes a key instrument. In other words, the group isn't averse to moaning for 10 minutes or so as it plucks away on various instruments. Still, Akron/Family built its reputation on killer live shows that blend psychedelic rock with stomping rhythmic chaos.
