Amy Rigby

with Jen Chapin. Wednesday, October 4, at the Beachland.

Amy Rigby couldn't be any more of a pop diva if she changed her name to Eleanor and prepped for her own VH1 special. Her musical lineage goes all the way back to the mid-'80s, when the Pittsburgh native and her brother formed a countryesque combo called the Last Roundup and released an album on Rounder. Although short-lived, that experience led her to the formation of the angry-but-cute young girl trio the Shams, which put out a couple of great albums and then called it a day in 1993. Three years later would see the release of Rigby's first solo album, the massively well-received, jangly guitar pop of Diary of a Mod Housewife, which detailed in excruciating exactitude the emotions involved in her dissolving marriage to dB Will Rigby. After an astounding amount of touring (for a middle-age rock chick with a prepubescent daughter at home, at any rate), Rigby came back in 1998 with the more settled and even better received Middlescence, which earned her a spot on a fair number of Top 10 end-of-year lists. Rigby maintains a rigorous touring schedule, making her the patron saint of mid-level, middle-aged rock and roll artists. Her current tour -- for which she'll be backed by guitarists Bill Lloyd and Steve Allen, bassist Lorne Rall, and drummer Paul Griffith -- is designed to promote her about-to-be-released third solo album, The Sugar Tree, further proof of Rigby's pop divinity and indestructible attitude.
