Non-multiplex flick picks

La Dolce Vita

Fellini's 1960 movie is older than almost all of the celebrities who show up in tabloids these days. But it's still one of his most relevant — and accessible — films, a biting look at a reporter who gets a little too close to the shallow stars he writes about. The three-hour running time may seem a tad excessive for a movie about paparazzi who chase the rich and famous through Rome, but there's a great story here. (By the way, did you know Fellini is credited with coining the word paparazzi in this movie?) The Cinematheque is showing a new print of the classic at 7:30 p.m. Friday, October 21, and 8:35 p.m. Saturday, October 22. — Michael Gallucci
