Non-multiplex flick picks

Le Havre

The Cinematheque's Tim Harry once took a ferry from the French port city of Le Havre to Ireland that involved a storm at sea and fellow passengers puking their guts out. But that's not why they're showing this latest movie by Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki. They're showing it because it's a typically sweet and funny story about a shoe-shiner who takes in an African boy who's making his way to London. At the Cinematheque at 9:15 p.m. Friday, January 13; 6:35 p.m. Saturday, January 14; and 7:50 p.m. Sunday, January 15. — Michael Gallucci

In the Family

After a gay man dies, the son he was raising with his partner moves in with the deceased man's sister, per his will. Cinematheque. At 6:45 p.m. Thursday, January 12, and 8:30 p.m. Saturday, January 14.

The Iron Lady

Meryl Streep adds Margaret Thatcher to her bulging bag of accomplished screen roles. Opens Friday at Shaker Square Cinemas.

My Afternoons With Margueritte

An old lady teaches an illiterate Gérard Depardieu. Cinematheque. At 7:30 p.m. Friday, January 13, and 4:30 p.m. Sunday, January 15.

Seven Chances

In this 1925 comedy, Buster Keaton will inherit a fortune if he gets married by the end of the day. Because the movie runs less than an hour, the Cinematheque will also show two shorts by Georges Méliès, the French film pioneer who's the inspiration behind another Oscar hopeful this year, Hugo. (At 5:15 p.m. January 14 and 6:30 p.m. January 15.)
