At the Arthouse

Non-multiplex flick picks for the week

Foolish Wives

The Cinematheque is prepping for movie critic Jonathan Rosenbaum's visit next month by screening some of his favorite movies. This one, a silent classic from 1922 directed by Erich von Stroheim, is about a Russian dude who poses as a count to woo women out of their fortunes. At the time, it was the most expensive film made in Hollywood. At 5:15 p.m. Saturday, September 17, and 8:30 p.m. Sunday, September 18.— Michael Gallucci

Beautiful Boy

As if a married couple played by Maria Bello and Michael Sheen didn't have enough problems, with their marriage falling apart and all, now they get news that their son went on a shooting spree at school. Cinematheque. At 8:45 p.m. Thursday, September 15, and 6:30 p.m. Sunday, September 18.

Big Night

The Cleveland Italian Film Festival kicks off this week with this 1996 movie about one of Italians' favorite subjects: food. Cedar Lee Theatre. At 7:30 p.m. Thursday, September 15.

Farmageddon

An excellently named documentary about organic farmers and the bastards trying to keep them down. Cleveland Museum of Art's Morley Lecture Hall. At 7 p.m. Friday, September 16, and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, September 18.

The Hedgehog

Nope, it's not about Ron Jeremy. It's a French movie about a depressed 11-year-old girl who takes things all serious and Frenchy. Opens Friday at the Cedar Lee Theatre. The People vs. George Lucas

George Lucas can't stop fucking with his Star Wars movies. So some irate fans stage a mock trial against him. Cleveland Museum of Art's Morley Lecture Hall. At 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 14.

Phantom of the Paradise

Melt Bar & Grilled's Late Shift series continues with Brian De Palma's 1974 Phantom of the Opera-like musical with tiny singer Paul Williams. A live cast will also be on hand doing wacky things as the movie plays, kinda like those annoying Rocky Horror Picture Show people. Capitol Theatre. At midnight, Saturday, September 17.

Rejoice and Shout

Praise the Lord! It's a documentary about gospel music. Cinematheque. At 7:25 p.m. Saturday, September 17, and 4 p.m. Sunday, September 18.

Submarine

A 15-year-old boy gets involved in his mom's love life. He also wants to lose his virginity, like real soon. Cinematheque. At 6:45 p.m. Thursday, September 15, and 9:25 p.m. Friday, September 16.
