At the Arthouse

Picks of the week, starting with a W.C. Fields joint

So's Your Old Man

W.C. Fields didn't make too many silent movies. In fact, this 1926 comedy wasn't even that well known until the Library of Congress preserved it not too long ago. If the story — a drunken inventor ups his social status after he starts hanging out with a foreign princess — seems familiar, that's because Fields remade it eight years later as You're Telling Me! Bonus: A pianist from Chicago's Gene Siskel Film Center will add live accompaniment to the 67-minute film. At the Cinematheque: 5:15 p.m. Saturday, November 27, and 6:30 p.m. Sunday, November 28.

Altiplano

Peruvian villagers rise up against the owners of a deadly mine, and a Belgian journalist and her doctor husband get caught up in the action. Cinematheque. At 8 p.m. Sunday, November 28, and 7:30 p.m. Monday, November 29.

The Army of Crime

Epic film about the French Resistance and all the Jews, poets, and commoners who fought against the Nazi insurgence during World War II. Cinematheque. At 8:10 p.m. Saturday, November 27, and 3:30 p.m. Sunday, November 28.

Ghost Bird

Documentary about birdwatchers who head to a small Arkansas town after word gets out that an elusive woodpecker might be hanging out there. Imagine their disappointment when they find out it's the super-annoying Woody. Cleveland Museum of Art's Morley Lecture Hall. At 7 p.m. Friday, November 26, and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, November 28.

Jacques Tati Short Films

Before the French funnyman made his near-silent physical comedies in the '50s, he starred in a series of shorts. The three in this program date back to the '30s and '40s, when he was still learning how to fall off a bike in style. Cinematheque. At 6:45 p.m. Saturday, November 27.
