Non-multiplex flick picks for the week

Cell 211

A young prison guard gets caught up and left behind in a riot and does the only logical thing, given the circumstances: He disguises himself as one of the prisoners. This hugely popular movie snagged eight Goya Awards (which are like the Spanish Oscars) last year. No surprise that Hollywood is now working on a remake, which it will probably ruin. So go see the original. At the very least you'll have bragging rights. At the Cinematheque at 8:40 p.m. Thursday, April 21, and 9:40 p.m. Saturday, April 23. — Michael Gallucci

The Kid

The Cinematheque's "Chaplin's Silent Films" series continues with one of Charlie Chaplin's best, a 1921 tearjerker about the Little Tramp adopting an orphan. Trivia: The Kid, Jackie Coogan, later played Uncle Fester in The Addams Family. Cinematheque. At 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 22, and 5:15 p.m. Saturday, April 23.

Kimjongilia

The Cleveland Museum of Art's series showcasing movies about North Korea continues with this documentary about defectors. Cleveland Museum of Art's Morley Lecture Hall. At 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 20.

Outside the Law

This historical drama about Algeria's fight for independence from France after World War II was nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar this year. It lost. Cinematheque. At 9:15 p.m. Friday, April 22, and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 23.

Secret Sunshine

A widow and her son move to her husband's hometown, where things change ... for better and worse. Cleveland Museum of Art's Morley Lecture Hall. At 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 22, and 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 23.

The Time We Killed

A writer muses on post-9/11 New York in this self-reflective and stylized movie. Cinematheque. At 6:45 p.m. Thursday, April 21.
