The Kid From Cleveland

The real-life pennant-winning Indians (including Bob Feller, Lou Boudreau, Hank Greenberg, and Satchel Paige) show up in this 1949 movie about a baseball team helping a troubled teen. The kid is played by Russ Tamblyn, who was in West Side Story, The War of the Gargantuas, and Twin Peaks, and is the father of Amber Tamblyn, last seen in 127 Hours. Ancient scenes featuring Municipal Stadium, the art museum, and other Cleveland spots make this a must-see for locals, even if the movie itself is kinda crappy. At the Cinematheque at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 21. — Michael Gallucci

Dumbstruck

Documentary about ventriloquists and their dummies. One of the movie's subjects, a former Mrs. Ohio America (double score!), will be on hand to answer questions after the screening. And yes, her dummy will be there too. Triple score! Cleveland Museum of Art's Morley Lecture Hall. At 6:45 p.m. Friday, July 22.

The First Beautiful Thing

A professor returns to his hometown to take care of his dying mom, whose wild and crazy life is chronicled over 40 years. Think her reckless behavior back in the day screwed up her misanthropic son? Duh! Cinematheque. At 7:35 p.m. Friday, July 22, and 9:25 p.m. Saturday, July 23.

In a Better World

This year's Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film centers on two troubled Danish boys whose messed-up lives collide. Cinematheque. At 5:15 p.m. Friday, July 22, and 7:05 p.m. Saturday, July 23.

Onibaba

Japanese horror movie from 1964 about two women who kill samurai for their armor. Cinematheque. At 9:55 p.m. Friday, July 22, and 5 p.m. Saturday, July 23.

Sansho the Bailiff

Classic from 1954 about a high-ranking dude who's sent into exile. Cleveland Museum of Art's Morley Lecture Hall. At 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 20.
