Non-multiplex flick picks this week

Miss Bala

This Mexican thriller was up for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar this year. But that's not why you should see it. You should see it because director Gerardo Naranjo stages the story — about a teen beauty-contest hopeful who gets sucked into an underworld filled with a drug kingpin and other really bad guys — with all the volatile excitement his breakthrough indie film I'm Gonna Explode promised. It's at the Cinematheque at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 25, and 9:10 p.m. Saturday, May 26. — Michael Gallucci

About Elly

The art museum takes over the Cinematheque's Asghar Farhadi series this week with the 2009 movie the Iranian director made right before last year's terrific A Separation. Cleveland Museum of Art's Morley Lecture Hall. At 6:45 p.m. Friday, May 25.

Declaration of War

A young couple — played by the movie's director and writers — cope with their young son's brain tumor. Yes, it's partly based on their true story. Cinematheque. At 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 25, and 7 p.m. Saturday, May 26.

The Ladies Man

The Cinematheque's 100 Years of Paramount Pictures series continues with Jerry Lewis' 1961 comedy about a misogynist jackass working at a boarding house for women. We hear they love it in France. Cinematheque. At 9:45 p.m. Friday, May 25, and 5:15 p.m. Saturday, May 26.

The Story of Film: An Odyssey

The ninth and tenth parts of a 15-hour movie, which the art museum is showing over 10 weeks. It's all about the history of the movies. Cleveland Museum of Art's Morley Lecture Hall. At 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, May 30.
