Band of the Week: Cereal Banter

Meet the band: Joseph Joseph (drums, bass) & Molly Pamela (vocals, synthesizers, pedals)

In the beginning: Joseph inititally didn't play with his girlfiend Pamela when he started Cereal Banter in 2009. But he brought her into the group in 2011 to mix things up. "I thought she'd have a unqiue perspective since she's an artist," he says. "She had no musical training." With shows at Musica and the Grog Shop looming on the horizon, he had six weeks to reinvent the band. "One of the biggest things that changed is that we could branch out and do things that are stranger," he says. "We went from a tight beast to more free form. It turned more into noise band."

Why you should hear them: Recorded in Greenpoint, N.Y., at Lone Pine Road Studio and engineered/mastered by Guardian Alien bassist Eli Winograd, the band's new 22-minute song/album, Sties of Pigs Flying with Flowers, Fields of Green Watered by Showers, has no overdubs. It's good, noisy fun that starts slow with some stuttering drum beats but picks up serious steam by song's end as Pamela provocatively screams "we're all animals" over pulsating synthesizers. "There's a lot of structure but more spaces for us to experiment," explains Joseph. "It was written to be recorded in one take. It was just inspiration of being on the road. When you play that many shows on the road, you hit a groove." The band hopes to follow the cassette-only release with a vinyl version.
