Meet the Band: Jared Mullins (vocals, guitars), Joe Brooks (bass), Andrew Merkle (drums)
Back to Cleveland: Singer-guitarist Jared Mullins grew up in Olmsted Falls but moved to San Diego a few years ago to pursue a history degree. While there, he formed the hard rock group Heavy Glow in 2008. He recently moved back to Cleveland because the central location makes touring easier. "I had always been doing music my whole life," he says. "The bands I was playing with in Cleveland were always three-pieces. Grad school wasn't really my thing. I didn't enjoy translating Latin until 3 in the morning." The group hasn't played Cleveland in years and Mullins anticipates being more active on the local scene now that he lives in town.
Not Stoner Rock: Though Mullins cites the local stoner rock duo Mr. Gnome as one of his favorite acts, he says Heavy Glow isn't a stoner rock band. "People have tried to lump us into the stoner rock genre because we were an hour from the desert, but I didn't really know what that was when we started," he says. "I do love Queens of the Stone Age but we're not trying to sound like them."
Why You Should Hear Them: The band is currently touring in support of the Foo Fighters-like single "Mine All Mine," which includes the groovy, guitar-driven "Headhunter" as a B-side. Michael Patterson (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Beck) produced the two songs, both of which will be on a full-length due out early next year. They're quite different from each other, but Mullins says the full-length won't be so eclectic that fans will be confused by the disparate sounds. "Those songs bookmark the whole gamut of what the album is about," says Mullins. "There will be some continuity in terms of the feel. All the songs are guitar-based. You won't get a reggae song. It all blends and works together well."
