Band of the Week: Honeybucket
Meet the Band: Adam Reifsnyder (acoustic guitar, vocals), Brendan O'Malley (mandolin, vocals), Abie Klein-Stefanchik (upright bass, vocals)
Trick or Treat: The band initially got together on Halloween night two years ago. "It was a coincidence," Reifsnyder says of the timing. "Brendan and I had been doing coffeehouse gigs and we started to write music that had a bluegrass-y feel. We wanted to add another singer to the mix and it just happened to be Halloween when we finally practiced with Abie. Kids kept ringing the doorbell while we were practicing."
All Over the Musical Map. Band members have all played in bands that have played different styles of music. That's why they prefer to think of their music as "new grass" rather than traditional bluegrass. "We're not traditional bluegrass though we've grown to appreciate it more since we started to play it," Reifsnyder says. "All three of us have more of a pop rock background. I think we write these more poppy bluegrass traditional rock songs and put this spin on it."
Why You Should Hear Them: The band launched a Kickstarter campaign in April and raised the money by May to record its debut and then recorded locally at Dangerhouse over the summer. Reifsnyder got married in early September so the band put the disc on the shelf. Until now. It comes out this week and the band plays a CD release concert at Nighttown. Songs such as the uptempo, vigorous "Ohio" feature terrific pop vocal harmonies. O'Malley started taking up the mandolin because he literally found one in his attic. "Because of that, our music is a hybrid," says Reifsnyder. "We recorded more of a live sound and tracked all the instruments at the same time. There was a little bit of editing but we did the vocals in the room at the same time. It captures more of a live performance."
