Band of the Week: Joshua Jesty and the Universe Doesn’t Stand a Chance Against Joshua Jesty
Meet the Band: Mike Miles (guitar, vocals); Joshua Davis (bass, vocals), The Bob (drums, vocals); Joshua Jesty (vocals, guitar)
The Early Days: Jesty wrote his first song when he was 12. “It was awful,” he says. “It was about topics I was really into — like cheese,” he says. “The music got moderately listenable when I was 19 or 20.” He then joined the indie rock band This is Exploding and had a good run with the band. “That was the last true democracy,” he says. “But we ended up fighting over every last measure of every song. We would write one song every six months. They were happy to go on and do more technical stuff with Megachurch.” Jesty put out his first proper solo release in 2009 and has been going “in and out of obscurity ever since.”
The Back Catalog: Jesty estimates he’s written hundreds of tunes. “It got a little ridiculous but, at one point, there were 150 songs suitable for public consummation,” he says. “I’ve stripped it back a little bit and tried to impose some quality control.”
Why You Should Hear Him: Jesty’s new album, Wasn’t the World Supposed to End, was originally intended to be a double record, but Jesty has split the tunes into four EPs. “Instead of putting out one big collection, I decided to break it into four smaller collections just so people know I exist,” he says. The EP commences with the moody “I Can’t Wait to See Your Light,” a tune that recalls ’90s alt rockers Live, and then proceeds to deliver a series of break-up ballads. “I guess they’re about heartbreak, but I wasn’t thinking about that when I wrote them,” Jesty says. I have gone through some relationship things. I wasn’t going for that but that’s what happened.”
