Maid Myriad

Meet the Band: JCK (singer-guitarist)

A One-Man Band: Singer-guitarist JCK formed Maid Myriad in 2007 and since that time has had a slew of musicians roll through his jam/experimental band. "Right now, it's a solo project," he says. "It's funny because we toured in February and the band I'm taking out this time is completely different. I don't prefer to do it this way but it's hard to expect people to drop everything and hop in a van and make no money."

Bass Head: JCK first learned to play bass before switching to guitar because, as he puts it, it was "ten times easier to write songs on guitar." The band could be described as a jam band but songs such as "Mr. Bigshot" are much heavier and suggest the influence of Nirvana and '90s alternative rock acts like Local H. "We created the genre 'kaleidoscope rock' because it's where I'm at in my life," JCK says when asked to describe his band's sound.

Progression: The group has finished recording a new album and JCK describes the forthcoming full-length as "angry" and says it has "progressive rock tendencies that never come to fruition because I love hooks." The album was supposed to have come out this month but the band recently signed to the New Jersey-based imprint Nefarious Industries, which is bringing in mixing engineer Jim Wirt (Incubus, Hoobastank, Fiona Apple) to put the finishing touches on it before releasing it later this summer.

Why You Should Hear Them: The band's boisterous live shows verge on punk rock as JCK and crew crank up the volume and artfully mix together blues, pop and psychedelic rock. The group kicks off a lengthy tour with a show at Musica, where it will celebrate the digital release of three new songs.
