Best Actor

David Hansen in I Hate This

In a year with surprisingly few stellar performances by male actors, David Hansen's heartrending turn in his self-authored one-act, I Hate This, was remarkable. The play, performed at Cleveland Public Theatre, dealt with the stillbirth of the playwright's son. Hansen portrayed himself, taking us through the torturous process with a gentle hand and even a few smiles. It was a wonderfully controlled acting job that never became maudlin or uncomfortably self-absorbed, while pointing out that there is no word for the parent of a dead child. No, but there now is a play and a performance that illuminate this dark corner of life.
