Best Beach

Headlands Beach State Park

Just west of Fairport Harbor lies a mile-long stretch of natural-sand beach, the largest in Ohio. That means plenty of room for soaking up rays, a cool swim, a volleyball game, or a sand castle big enough to rival the nearby lighthouse. Want fish for dinner? Park your car at the east end, then follow the crowd of rods and buckets out past the walkway to the breakwall -- you can catch bass, perch, and walleye. If the sun is shining, you won't want to leave, so walk up to Headlands' picnic area, which is stocked with tables and grills. Family-friendly, the beach also has a children's playground and plenty of restrooms with changing stations. It's the one Cleveland-area beach that feels like, well, a beach.
