When Ines Rehner emigrated from Croatia in 1989, she couldn't find her favorite European-style chocolate. So she made her own -- a secret blend of high-quality cocoas, chocolate liqueurs, sugars, and natural flavorings -- and opened a store to spread the love. A small army of devoted workers handcraft the delights, including 17 types of European truffles and hand-dipped orange slices, marzipan, and torrone (an Italian nougat). The candy bar is reincarnated here as two wafer-thin bars of milk or dark chocolate with homemade raspberry jam in the middle and almonds on top. Melt-in-your-mouth nirvana. Rehner works the counter like Juliette Binoche in Chocolat
, lovingly dispensing her sweet little bundles of happiness.
