Downtown workers and residents got a major lifestyle boost this past winter with the opening of Constantino's Market in the Warehouse District. A robust blend of gourmet grocery, corner convenience store, and upscale carryout, Constantino's offers just about anything an urban pioneer could ask for, including aspirin, cat food, and artisanal chocolates. (Hey, you have your "necessities," and we have ours.) Need a birthday card and a bottle of Veuve Clicquot? They have it. Need a six-pack and some pizza to go? They have that too. Better still, an impressive selection of ready-to-eat foods like bagels, muffins, sandwiches, salads, soups, sushi, and spinach-stuffed pork tenderloin makes it simple to grab a morning pastry and a cuppa, or a thick wrap sandwich for lunch or dinner. (A handful of indoor tables and a shaded sidewalk patio welcome those with time to linger.) But as good as all that seems, owners Costas and Anna Mavromichalis aren't content to be "just" grocers: They see themselves as community boosters too. To that end, they host wine-tastings, live musical performances, and other activities to encourage a bustling downtown street scene. Cook it, and they will come.
