20,000 Leagues Under the Industry

Six years ago, local auteurs Matthew T. and Marcel DeJure launched the subversively hip film fest known as 20,000 Leagues Under the Industry. It was intended to showcase amateur filmmaking - something they felt mainstream fests like Sundance and Cannes had gotten away from. Since then, they've remained true to their vision. Annual shows at the Beachland Ballroom have introduced Cleveland audiences to films they otherwise wouldn't see. Selections for 2004 included a documentary about lovesick tugboats and a film about Watergate, told from the perspective of Richard Nixon's dog. This past summer, 20,000 Leagues teamed up with MOCA, showing several experimental films on a drive-in-style screen outside the museum - including a new music video from the group I Am the World Trade Center, a young synth-pop duo making some minor waves on the net. According to Matthew T., the merger with MOCA is permanent, which means a few changes this year. Instead of one big fest, 20,000 Leagues plans to screen smaller shows at the museum throughout the year. That means more of a good thing.
