Best Local Artist

Douglas Lucak

Fine art photographer Douglas Lucak's Cleveland is sad, lonely, and magical. It's a city of fences, smokestacks, and wire, where even the shiny buildings of downtown seem to carry the weight of the city's industrial toil. Lucak takes most of his photos with a pinhole camera -- a simple box that lets the natural light create hazy images -- but his work is more than a gimmick. His eye is his greatest attribute: He has the ability to pick out the tension residing in two rocking horses mounted on a fence, or the menace of a car sitting askew in a backyard. In his photos, Lucak finds emotions, desires, and frustrations reflected in the industrial activity and decay at the heart of the city.
