The list of Cleveland composers is long and distinguished. Unfortunately, few on that list get much attention outside scholarly circles. Still, a few are making quite a name for themselves on the national scene. One must pay honor to Margaret Brouwer, head of the composition department at the Cleveland Institute of Music. In addition to a vast catalog of composition spanning most major forms, Brouwer's many accomplishments include a Guggenheim Fellowship, an award from the Academy of Arts and Letters, and a well-received CD titled Aurolucent Circles on the popular classical recording label Naxos. If you don't know Brouwer's music yet, you will soon.
