Best Neighborhood Collaboration

Gordon Square Arts District & The Capitol Theatre

It doesn't hurt that James Levin got the ball rolling 25 years ago by founding Cleveland Public Theatre in a neighborhood that was then lined with board-ups and dive joints. It also doesn't hurt that a bunch of small businesses landed like snow on concrete and melted before accumulation. But ever since the Detroit Shoreway Community Development Corporation (working with CPT and councilman Matt Zone) launched the Gordon Square Arts District, the 10 blocks on Detroit Avenue near West 65th Street have risen from rust-belt ashes in ways that should make other Cleveland neighborhoods drool. Gordon Square Arts District isn't just a place to see a show anymore; it's become one of Cleveland's very best neighborhoods. There's Gypsy Beans & Baking, the homegrown Room Service boutique, the 1point618 gallery and a major streetscape improvement. And now, there's the newly opened Capitol Theatre — part of the Cleveland Cinemas chain that owns the Cedar Lee, the city's only art-house theater — offering the best of both worlds: The digital central auditorium (which is equipped for 3D) screens mainstream movies; the two smaller upstairs theaters shows art-house faves. The multi-million dollar remodeling job retained much of the venue's original woodwork and lighting fixtures. And with a full liquor license, you'll find the same selection of beer and wine that's at the Cedar Lee. The Capitol complements the restaurants that have already opened in the area. So you can pick up some good grub on your way to see the latest Michael Moore documentary. (W. 65th and Detroit, gordonsquare.org, clevelandcinemas.com) — Gill, Niesel
