Best New Bookstore

Horizontal Books

Book lovers mourned when chaotic used-book haven Bookstore on West 25th finally closed after years of back-from-the-brink financial emergencies. But many of them cheered when Horizontal Books opened in the space this past spring. In a reverse of the trend of stores moving from bricks and mortar to the Internet, the store is a physical manifestation of a business that's been operating online for more than four years. Like the previous tenant, Horizontal specializes in selling books cheap, but it features new overstock rather than used books. The pricing will have recovering book addicts falling off the wagon: 50 percent off one book, 60 percent off two, and 70 percent off three. The store is less cluttered and more browser-friendly that the old bookstore, with books displayed face out so you can scan the stock in less time. Maybe you won't spend hours digging in tottering piles for an unexpected treasure, but with well-marked sections, you're more likely to find a bunch of stuff you want.
