George Forbes on the School Levy

When it looked as if the school levy would constitute a referendum on Mayor White, arch-nemesis George Forbes stunned the community by unleashing a campaign to kill it -- saying he feared the mayor would give the construction contracts to his buddies. Forbes eventually backed off, the levy passed, and nearly $900 million in local and matching state funds have been devoted to fixing bad heating systems, collapsing roofs, and other structural problems. This Forbes-White feud, at least, had a happy ending: The kids triumphed.
