Developed as a Methodist retreat, Lakeside does have its overtly Christian leanings (check out the crucifix atop the pier's flagpole), but its focus is more on family values. The town is situated between Marblehead and Port Clinton, where scores of passengers are ferried to and from Kelley's Island each day. But the summer denizens of Lakeside know that you needn't leave the mainland to escape your hectic schedule. Pack some good reading and head for the porch of the stately Hotel Lakeside, where the Erie shore takes on the look of a coastal Georgian plantation. Don't plan on drinking or dancing, but do plan on a refreshingly slower pace to life.
