Bites: Jillian's Closing, Match Works Opening

Fans of Jillian's Billiard Club should say their goodbyes now or forever hold their peace. Within the next two months, the 20-year-old Cleveland Heights entertainment venue will be no more. The club is the last Jillian's location in Ohio.

By spring, building owner Kim Lisboa will convert the 10,000-square-foot space into a "New York-style tapas bar" with live entertainment and lighter fare, she says. Almost all of the billiard tables and video games will be removed.

Lisboa, a graduate of Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration, hopes for an April opening. For now, find Jillian's at 12459 Cedar Rd.; call 216-397-0900 for info.

For nearly a decade, Tom Quick ran the popular Concord restaurant Epiq Bistro. He lasted less than six months as chef of Zinc Bistro downtown.

"It wasn't a good fit," Quick says of his fall departure from the still-new Cleveland restaurant.

It did not take long for the chef to land elsewhere. On February 3, Quick opened the Match Works Tavern in Mentor, located in the former home of Blue Tip Grille and Cabana's.

"I think we set a record," adds Quick, referring to the speedy turnaround.

The chef describes the dinner fare as gastropub-esque, with more focus on wines than craft beers. The lengthy and eclectic menu features a dozen bar snacks, an equal number of small plates, and even more pastas and entrées. Apart from a meaty T-bone steak that nets $24, nothing on the menu climbs above $18, with most coming in at less than $16. Among the mains, you'll find penne with pork Bolognese ($13), crispy pork schnitzel with a fried egg ($16), and veal meatloaf ($16).

Look for lunch to begin shortly. You can find the Match Works at 8500 Station St.; call 440-255-0400 or go to matchworkstavern.com to learn more. — Trattner
