I Am Gemini (Saddle Creek)
On previous Cursive albums, frontman Tim Kasher aired out a bunch of his dirty laundry — everything from his divorce to mother issues. On their seventh record, he pulls back on the personal stuff and gets all artsy with a 13-song concept album about twin brothers separated at birth whose good-vs.-evil battle takes on soul-shaking proportions. Lyrically, it's kinda messy, but the band has never been more musically focused. From the stuttering guitar attack in the opener "This House Alive," to the pounding of "The Sun and Moon," to the rockabilly shuffle of "The Cat and Mouse," I Am Gemini is Cursive's most adventurous album — a rugged slab of muscular indie rock. The story plays out like a Greek tragedy, complete with a chorus made up of devils and angels. But it's how they relate this ages-old tale that gives the album its classic sound. — Michael Gallucci
