CD Review: Drumbeat

Infinity

(drumplay.com)

This jazzy jam band has featured a rotating membership for almost 20 years. The only constant is James Onysko, who's led the group through some decidedly fringe music over the past couple of decades. "Limbo Jimbo," the opening track on their latest album, recalls Ornette Coleman's noisy free-jazz period. So does "Kaki Lambe Flambe," which includes blaring saxophones and a steady percussive backbeat. Even a song like "Dakar," which starts as a groovy blues track, evolves into an esoteric jam. But don't let Drumplay's hippie aesthetic deceive you; they're serious about their music, as Infinity's five studio cuts and one live song consistently prove. — Jeff Niesel
