CD Review: Eternal Legacy

Seeking No Peace (Auburn)

Though not quite as heavy, this local metal band hearkens back to the early days of iconic metal acts like Metallica and Slayer. Recorded in Avon at the band's own Mercinary Studios, the album kicks off with an arty intro before the thrashing begins. "Cauterize" sounds a bit like Judas Priest and the guitar work in "Dielectric" recalls Metallica's "Master of Puppets." The turgid "Eyes Without a Soul" features soaring operatic vocals that balance out the speed metal guitar workouts.  It's a testament to the band's talent that songs such as the simmering title track and the semi-acoustic "Lie" — which allows guitarist Jason Vanek to show off his impressive vocal range — are highly accessible without making any concessions. Larry Weber, a longtime Auburn Records collaborator, designed the kick-ass cover art. — Jeff Niesel

Eternal Legacy performs with Deadiron, Wretch and Ego at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 5 at Peabody's.
