Suburban Sci-Fi (Scatterbrainiac)

CD Review: Proof I Exist

Suburban Sci-Fi (Scatterbrainiac)

Paul Kulis, the one-man-band better known as Proof I Exist, nestles in nicely with today's bedroom-indie scene on his debut album, occasionally tucking in with the poppier alternative bands of the 1990s. Suburban Sci-Fi is filled with traveling music custom-made for summer road trips. This is truly happy stuff; check out the guitar riff that fuels the opening track "Modern Day Love Song" or the handclap-propelled "Trespassing in Heaven." Proof I Exist has a thing for the past, no doubt, but Suburban Sci-Fi also finds inspiration in today's indie scene — especially with Kulis' DIY tinkering. Bottom line: He wants you to have a good time, and it's damn hard not to oblige. — Steve DiMatteo
