CD Review: Smiley Baldazar

Fresh Local Nectarines

(smileybaldazar.com)

Smiley Baldazar's new album clocks in at more than 75 minutes, so there's no shortage of content or ideas here. But it's hard to classify the Lakewood band's music, since they rarely stay in one genre long enough for anything to take shape. "Drink Blood" recalls Dookie-era Green Day, while the slow and sludgy "Bobby O's/Quail" follows a Helmet-like progression. Then there's the straight-up blues rock ("Suitcase full of 20's"), the semi-ska ("Let Go"), and "Got What You Wanted," which combines a George Harrison guitar riff with lots of Auto-Tune. Too bad Steve Smith's voice wasn't made for all this stuff. Still, there's plenty of interesting music here if you're willing to wade through it all. — Ben Gifford
