CD Review: Tom Morello: The Nightwatchman

Union Town (New West)

Former Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello may be one of the planet's best shredders, but one listen to the solo recordings he makes as the Nightwatchman reveals where his true intentions lie. On this eight-song EP, he channels rabble-rousing folksingers like Woody Guthrie and Billy Bragg with a set of songs stemming from the union protests in Wisconsin a few months ago. Morello covers power-to-the-people fist-raisers like "I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night" and Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land," and contributes his own "Union Song." But like so much protest music, Union Town's message often supersedes the songs. Morello's flat, expressionless vocals don't help in spreading the word. Good intentions, but when's the last time you listened to Bragg's The Internationale? — Michael Gallucci
