Food Fight in Tremont

Ever wish you could be a judge on Iron Chef? Fat chance of that. However, Tremont West Development Corporation is serving up the next best thing: a chance to judge food from four of the neighborhood's top toques in tonight's Steelyard Chef competition. "We wanted to put together an event that honored our steel-mill heritage while celebrating the restaurants that have led to our renaissance," says Tremont West Director Cory Riordan. "So we invited chefs from Lolita, Dante, Fat Cats, and Fahrenheit to compete in an Iron Chef-style battle, where the diners will be the judge." It all goes down from 6 to 10 p.m. in the tented parking lot of St. Theodosius Orthodox Cathedral. "The church has a great view of the Flats, which, when you think about it, is where this neighborhood got its start in the first place," says Riordan. Your $75 ticket includes live music, an open bar, passed hors d'oeuvres, dessert, and tastes of all four entrées. The entrée that gets the most votes wins; the chef goes home with a specially commissioned work of local art that he can display until next year's battle. Like his competitors, Fahrenheit's Rocco Whalen won't dish about what he'll be cooking, other than to promise he'll push the envelope. "Anytime we can come together as a community, it's a great thing," he says. "And you always eat well when you eat in Tremont." Order tickets at the website. Proceeds go to benefit the Tremont West Development Corporation.

The Taste of Autumn

Founded in 1932, the Coit Road Farmers Market traces its roots back to the era after World War I, when area farmers began gathering in the Collinwood neighborhood to sell produce from the backs of their trucks. Today, the venerable nonprofit boasts a four-acre site that includes an urban farm and a community garden. The market's annual benefit is set for today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Beachland Ballroom. Your $35 ticket includes farm-fresh foods prepared by local chefs including the Beachland's own Brian Doyle, and tasty music from Albert Dennis and friends. Best of all, it helps ensure another eight decades of community access to affordable, locally sourced foods. Get tickets at the website.

Pio Cesare Wine Dinner at Flour

Wine dinners at Flour are something special: Casual, friendly, and informative, they're like a cross between a party and a private tasting with the winemaker. Tonight's edition begins at 7 and features wines from Pio Cesare, a 131-year-old operation in Alba, and one of the first to recognize the potential and quality of Barolo, Barbaresco, and the other great wines of the Piemonte region. Representing the winery will be the entertaining Cesare Benvento. Crafting the five courses of accompanying fare will be chefs Paul Minnillo and Matt Mytro. On the menu, you'll find items like scallops, pork cannelloni, Colorado lamb, sweetbreads, and imported cheeses. Cost is $125 per person, plus tax and tip. Phone reservations are requested.

Old World Wednesdays at Prosperity Social Club

"We're celebrating Cleveland's culinary heritage one sausage, pierogi, and stuffed cabbage at a time!" says owner Bonnie Flinner about the Old World Wednesdays promotion at Tremont's Prosperity Social Club. Beginning tonight and extending throughout the winter, Wednesdays will usher in a special menu filled with cold-weather comforts like pierogi, cabbage and noodles, potato pancakes, kielbasa, and stuffed cabbage – all washed down, as Uncle Stosh intended, with an assortment of Polish and Slovenian bottled beers. As a final garnish, there'll be live polka music, performed by accordionist Stan Mejac, from 6 to 9 p.m. Kitchen hours are 5 p.m. to 2 a.m.
