Dia de Muertos Celebration

This Detroit-Shoreway classic will kick off at the Cleveland Public Theatre campus in the Gordon Square Arts District. An all-ages event, it features live music, dancing, food, and altar exhibitions. The festivities start at 11 a.m., with the Parade of the Skeletons stepping off at 3:30 p.m. For foodies, the prime attraction is a group of local restaurants that will be showcasing their talents by constructing themed menus promised to be so good they will "wake the dead." Spice Kitchen and Bar is using the event to pay homage to the "dead restaurants that came before us" — specifically, featuring items from previous tenants Crazy Mac's and Roseangel. Down the street, Rincon Criollo will be serving authentic South American dishes with flair. For dessert, Sweet Moses will serve Chocolate Mexicana, a spicy dark chocolate ice cream made with cayenne pepper, pasilla chili powder, cinnamon, and vanilla. The street will also be littered with your favorite food trucks, like JiBaro World Eats, Umami Moto, and Motor Mouth.

Burgess Wine Dinner

Paul Minnillo, chef-owner of Flour, was a pioneer in shaping Cleveland wine palates. He spent the early years of the wine trend traveling to Napa, meeting the winemakers, and doing the tastings. At the same time, Akron-based IBM corporate pilot Tom Burgess fell in love with that region. Years later, his company, Burgess Cellars, has become a significant player in the wine market. During a recent trip to Napa with fellow Flour chef Matt Mytro, Minnillo met Tom's son, Steve, who is in charge of the wine business now. They decided to combine forces for a special wine dinner. "We haven't done a Burgess Dinner in about 15 years," Minnillo says. "It's time." Minnillo and Mytro plan to roll out the "edible carpet" for Burgess with a five-course meal sure to be spectacular. Tickets ($85) can be purchased directly from Flour.

Cleveland Restaurant Week

Starting today through Nov. 19, this sprawling event offers a special deal at 80-plus locally owned, independent restaurants. For $33, you can sample three-course prix fixe menus (gratuity not included, and selections and prices may vary at some restaurants). Fire Food and Drink, Moxie the restaurant, Parallax, Flying Fig, and John Q's are a few of the places worth visiting. "This is, our most popular promotion," says Cleveland Independents President Jonathan Bennett, executive chef and vice-president of the Red Restaurant Group. In its seventh year, the event continues to stress its community component, starting new relationships with Tri-C Culinary and the Children's Hunger Alliance. A list of participating restaurants, menus, and reservations made through Open Table, will be posted on the website.

Book Event: West Side Market: 100 Years & Still Cooking

Local food writers Laura Taxel and Marilou Suszko have joined forces to produce this new book, which documents the rich history of the landmark celebrating its centennial this year. At the Independence Civic Center tonight at 7, the authors will share market storiest and sign copies of their book, available for purchase. Space is limited, so make reservations at 216-447-0160 or on the Independence Library website.

Creekside Restaurant Bourbon Dinner

What do you do when you want to create a top-shelf, bourbon-themed dinner? You call in the Ambassador. Pete Wagner, one of the area's select few whiskey ambassadors, will be on hand for the evening. Chef Kristen Sheats is preparing a five-course dinner to complement each hand-selected bourbon. The evening begins with a Mint Julep served with bourbon-bacon caramel corn and corn lobster fritters. Two more courses featuring single-barrel Jack Daniel's will be served before a Woodford reserve shot hits your table. Tickets are $50 and must be purchased in advance.
