Bistro 185's Last Chance Lobster and Clambake

The good folks at Bistro 185 are well aware that Cleveland is in the twilight of clambake season. With Thanksgiving right around the corner, they want to ensure that you can get your fill of lobster and clams. Known for their pioneering "farm to table" philosophy (the restaurant is equipped with a rooftop garden), they are offering a farewell to summer fare with all the usual suspects: New England clam chowder, a one-pound whole lobster, one-quarter of a barbecue chicken, a dozen clams, corn on the cob, and a sweet potato. If you have any room left, there will also be plenty of slaw and cornbread to help fill you up. The cost is $58.50, and the fun starts at 5 p.m. Reservations are required; call the number below.

Fabulous Food Show

It's that time of year again: Celebrity chefs will be strutting their stuff at the Fabulous Food Show at the I-X Center. As the popularity of chefs continues to grow, so does this event. Kicking off today and running through Nov. 11, this premier culinary celebration features over 500 fine art, fine wine, and fine food exhibitors, along with a great lineup of legendary cooks. Cleveland's own Michael Symon anchors fellow rock star chefs Guy Fieri, Anne Burrell, and Jeff Mauro. Rounding out the powerhouse lineup are chefs Jacques and Claudine Pépin, Sara Moulton, and Mary Ann Esposito. Tickets can be purchased on the website.

Downtown Farmers Market

The Downtown Farmers Market's Holiday Market is in full swing today. Don't worry about staying warm — it's taken up residence in the cozy 5th Street Arcades (formerly Colonial Marketplace). Every Friday through Dec. 21, this independent "producer-only" market is all about being local. In fact, most of the produce sold at the market is actually grown in the city of Cleveland. Working closely with hoop houses and greenhouses, DFM farmers have extended their growing season to produce some seasonal goodies. Peanuts, micro greens, Christmas Lima Beans, and Jersey Wakefield Kraut Cabbage are just a few of the market's organic offerings. Beyond the fresh produce, local specialty items like jams, jellies, baked goods, grass-fed cheese, salsas, and granola bars will also be for sale. In true holiday form, market shoppers will smell chestnuts roasting on the sidewalk on their way to snag a made-to-order crepe. Now in its third year, this farmers market has proven to be a great way to utilize this historic space and showcase Cleveland growers. Set your smart phone alarm for a Friday lunch break here, but make it an early lunch, as the market runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

It's a dream assignment: I will be joining the panel of gourmands who have the deliciously daunting task of deciding who makes the best bacon dishes at the Great Sugardale BAC-ON national competition. Earlier this year, bacon lovers from all over the country were invited to enter original bacon recipes in one of three categories: Appetizer/Sides/Entertaining, Ready Bacon®, and Main Dish. Sugardale has asked yours truly to judge the appetizer and sides category of this contest, which is being held at the I-X Center. Each category winner will receive $500 and a year's supply of Sugardale bacon. The category winners will then compete in a final round for the chance to win $3,000 and the title of "Grand BAC-ON Champion." Bring on the pork! Tickets can be purchased on the website.

Cleveland Signature Chef's Auction

Starting at 5:30 tonight, the March of Dimes is holding its 22nd annual Cleveland Signature Chef's Auction. Held at Windows on the River this year, the event taps the goodwill of local chefs to help raise money to improve the health of babies. Each participating chef is asked to prepare a signature food item and/or donate a unique package to be sold during the auction part of the evening. Some of greater Cleveland's finest chefs and establishments will be participating, including AMP 150, Spice, Black Dog Kitchen and Bar, Don's Light House, MUSE, Lure, Pier W, La Strada, and many others. Drinks and dessert won't be forgotten. Great Lakes Brewery and Cellar Rat Brewery will provide some suds to sample, while Lily's Handmade Chocolates from Tremont will satisfy your sweet tooth. Tickets start at $150 and can be purchased online.
